ウィリアムとビルについて

ウィリアムというのはアメリカでよくある名前である。たとえば、マイクロソフトのウィリアム・ゲイツやHPのウィリアム・ヒューレット、Sunmicroのウィリアム・ジョイ。そして、その愛称がビルなのである。まあ一般的に言えば、ウィリアムより、ビルゲイツやビルヒューレットと言った方が聞きなれているかもしれない。

しかしながら、ウィリアムとビルを比べるとまったく共通点が見あたらない。愛称と言えば、他にもデイビットがデイブだったり、レベッカがベッキーだったりと分かりやすいものも多いのですが、ウィリアムとビルに関してはなんでなのか結構疑問になったりした。

まあ答えとしてはあっけないのだが、Williamをそのまま省略するとWillになる。ここまでは問題ないだろう。しかし、次が厄介だ。Willをそのまま発音するのではなく、ドイツ読みで発音するのだ。そうすると、Billとなる。ドイツ読みではWの音はBと発音するそうです。例えば、フォルクスワーゲンはドイツ読みだとフォルクスバーゲンとなる。このように、Willもドイツ読みしてBillとなったのである。

なぜドイツ読みが出てきたのか。たぶんアメリカは移民が多いので、そういう発音に関して結構あいまいなところがあるのかもしれないですね。うん。


William and Bill


William is a common name in U.S.A. For example, William Gates of Microsoft and William Hewlett of HP, William Joey of Sunmicro.And the nick name is a bill.
Generally speaking, the person who said Bill Gates and Bill Hewlett than William may be used.
However, a common point is not found at all when it compare a building with William.Speaking of a nick name, there are many things that Dave or Rebecca are easy to understand a D bit with Becky.I became the doubt with William plenty about the bill what it was in.

it is disappointing for an answer.William omit Will.It will not have any problem to here.However, next is difficult.It do not just pronounce Will and pronounce it by a German reading.
Then It become Bill.
[w] pronounce the sound of [b] by the German reading.For example, Volkswagen becomes the Volksbagen when it is a German reading.
Will did a German reading in this way, too and became Bill.
